WC Zwingelberg, writing as “Dr. Z” offers up the first in a planned series of children’s books centering on a boy’s search for his parents, lost in Hurricane Katrina.  As Louisiana child prodigy Will takes to the open sea in a small sailboat, the author takes readers through the boys sometimes comedic, sometimes sad, sometimes harrowing adventures on the Gulf Stream while providing educational tidbits on subjects including sailing, biology, and geography.  Numerous words and phrases of interest (mostly but not exclusively nautical) are highlighted in the text and defined in a seven-page glossary. Informational sketches and diagrams are mixed with charmingly childlike illustrations contributed by the Zwingelberg’ s granddaughters, Anna and Dakota.  Writing in simple language easily accessible to the books 8-to-14-year-old target readership, Zwingelberg manages to fold educational material into his story smoothly, with a result that is intelligent, poignant and exciting enough to hold the interest even of adult readers.  (Steve Matrazzo)
